Internet auctions with many traders

چکیده

We study a multi-unit auction environment similar to eBay. Sellers, each with a single unit of a homogenous good, set reserve prices at their own independent second-price auctions. Each buyer has a private value for the good and wishes to acquire a single unit. Buyers can bid as often as they like and move between the sellers’ auctions in a dynamic environment. We characterize a perfect Bayesian equilibrium for this decentralized trading mechanism in which, conditional on reserve prices, an efficient set of trades occurs at a uniform trading price. When the number of buyers and sellers is large but finite, the sellers set reserve prices equal to their true costs under a very mild distributional assumption, so ex-post efficiency is achieved. The buyers’ strategies in this equilibrium are very simple and do not depend on their beliefs about the other buyers’ valuations, or the number of buyers and sellers. They bid almost myopically. Their only ‘sophisticated’ choice is where to bid when they are indifferent between several sellers. JEL fields: C73, C78, D44

Efficiency of Large Double Auctions

MANY MARKET SETTINGS are approximated by a double auction. Standard examples are the London gold market and the order books maintained by New York Stock Exchange specialists. These auctions typically have many traders on each side of the market. More importantly, large double auctions are an excellent model for microfoundations of price formation in competitive markets. Like a competitive marke...

JCAT: a platform for the TAC market design competition

Auctions, when well designed, result in desirable economic outcomes and have been widely used in solving real-world resource allocation problems, and in structuring stock or futures exchanges. The field of auction mechanism design has drawn much attention in recent years from economists, mathematicians, and computer scientists. In traditional auction theory, auctions are viewed as games of inco...

Internet Trading Mechanisms and Rational Expectations

This paper studies an internet trading mechanism similar to the one described in (Peters and Severinov 2001) in a market where traders values are interdependent. Conditions are given for which this mechanism has a perfect Bayesian equilibrium which supports allocations that are the same as the allocations supported by a rational expectations equilibrium. In particular, this equilibrium supports...

Trust-building on the Internet: evidence from eBay

Online auction web sites provide a convenient yet risky trading venue for the participants. The uncertainty about the product quality and the credibility of the traders, however, may impede the liquidity and efficiency of the trades in online auctions. This research seeks to establish a framework to better assess the effect of a seller’s feedback “reputation” on the closing price of an online a...

Multiattribute Auctions Based on Generalized Additive Independence

We develop multiattribute auctions that accommodate generalized additive independent (GAI) preferences. We propose an iterative auction mechanism that maintains prices on potentially overlapping GAI clusters of attributes, thus decreases elicitation and computational burden, and creates an open competition among suppliers over a multidimensional domain. Most significantly, the auction is guaran...
